Buying board games and fun stuff
« on: April 26, 2012, 10:05:14 AM »
So, we love to play games during our Sabbath afternoons.  One thing I have been thinking about is what to do when you have down time after doomsday. We have been finding tons of board games at garage sells that we are buying to play and I thought if we start buying lots of games for doomsday we'd be pretty entertained.. What are you guys plans for down time???

I have two of my favorite books packed, along with some Sudoku and logic problem books/magazines.  For games we have cards and chess.
Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Board games would be great, but it's only going to work out if you'll be able to stay in your house long term. I like having smaller things like cards in our backpacks. Cards are small but really versatile because you can play a ton of games with them.

Writing, reading, drawing, planning, Various card games (Solitaire), various dice games (Yahtze), Mastermind, Monopoly, mazes

Mostly non-electronic, but when available, the same things on a computer.

Electronic only: SimCity, Karaoke, Video, Recordered music

Doesn't take much to entertain me, when I'm in the mood and have either pencil and paper or a working computer at hand.

Cards, board games, puzzle books, Top Trumps, jacks - anything that can keep your mind occupied, especially as you may be in a SHTF situation where electricity is down for a time, or there may even be rolling blackouts.

I would also recommend head torches!!!

I think just a pack of playing cards would be enough. There are so many games that you can play with those cards. You can play with cards even alone.

I have a short attention span. Get tired of things quickly. Having only one thing to pass the time with would not only wind up boring me, but bother me because I only chose one thing when I could have at least two or three.

Just my opinion.

+1, although it is not so much a short attention span as I need some variety.

Board games are great for down time, and if there was no electric, all you have to worry about is not losing any of the component parks. Pencil and paper games such as 'Hangman' are also good in a crisis. Just goes to show you don't need electronics for entertainment.

It is great to imagine that there will be some time to play games during a crisis...I imagine that would be a good time for reading the scriptures and playing uno.  It might be nice to read some of the classics too....I remember in the movie the Time Machine it is interesting to note that he came back to his library and took one book of the shelf to return to the future...and what book did he take? A future without God wouldn't be much of a future!

How about a chess board? This is one game that gives the mind a lot of exercise. It's a good way to learn planning and strategies.

@irlady66 we play Christian Headbands on Sabbath, I love it. We also play Biblical Trivia Pursuit.

@Jessi I thought about that too and got some travel size games to fit into a backpack.

I agree, board games would definitely be everybody's alternative form of entertainment when doomsday scenario happens where electricity would be not available

A classic game of Chutes and Ladders always gets me going. Maybe some Clue or Scrabble too. Any board game that has a lot of involvement is a great one to play.

Chutes and Ladders? Is that the same game as Snakes and Ladders? I played that a long time ago. Pretty entertaining at that time. Doubt if I can still get into it now.

I think having playing cards in addition to a few board games is ideal. Throw in some paper, pens and pencils and that should be enough to keep a family entertained for awhile. I would also add a few books, as I love to read. I have a book called The Backyard Homesteader which would be ideal so a person had some guidelines on how to start over if need be.

I think simple things like playing cards should also be considered during a survival situation, cards are actually more mentally stimulating

I love board and really miss playing with them. I think the classic scrabble and chess will never get old in our family when we decided to just chill in the living room. With all the apps and technology these days, going back gaming old school style is definitely refreshing!
